How does it work?
The Product Upsell App by Shappify is an app designed with shop owners in mind. It provides a quick and easy way for Shopify eCommerce users to promote and upsell inventory in their stores. Here's how it works:
When your customer clicks on "Checkout" in your cart, a beautifully designed, simple and non intrusive, popup window opens to offer them one last chance to purchase more products. They can then either kindly decline and continue to pay, or add the item(s) to their order right there, without ever leaving your shopping cart! You even can setup exactly which products you'd like to upsell based on what's currently in their cart to ensure they are offered relevant items.
Whether you'd like to offer a great deal on an old item that you're trying to clear out, or trying to upsell add ons that compliment what they are already buying, this app is what you need to increase sales immediately! Upsell General Addons: Let's say that you sell golf equipment on your store. What is the one thing that every golfer needs? Golf balls of course! Why not set up the app to upsell golf balls at time of checkout to every customer as one last reminder?

You can upsell specific products based on the items your customer already has in his/her cart. This gives you the flexibility to promote more targeted products and increase your chance of upselling by offering products relevant to them.

The whole point of this app is to increase sales. You have the ability to offer amazing deals on products only when your customers spend over a certain amount (determined by you). You can also offer different products and discount amounts for price ranges of your choice. The more they spend, the better deal they get!

There are two main ways that you can offer upsells to customers: based on the total dollar amount of the checkout or based the products in their cart. Setting the offers based on what’s in their cart will give you a much higher conversion rate. The more precise you are with your offers the more success you will see. If you just offer one generic upsell offer for all purchases through your website you will see some success, but nowhere near the level of success you will see if you create unique offers for different items on your store. For example if someone buys a Nikon camera offer them a Nikon battery, if someone buys a Canon offer them a Canon battery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why does my upsell offer does not show up when I click checkout?A: If you are testing it out on your website and you are sure that you are adding items to the cart that should trigger the offer but it is still not showing up it can be because of two reasons:
Possible reason #1 - Duplicate product: If the upsell offer that is supposed to be triggers has a product in it that is already in the shipping cart the offer will not be presented. It wouldn't make sense if someone buys something and then is offered the exact same thing again at checkout, so it is smart and knows not to offer something if it's already in the customers cart
Possible reason #2 - Clicking checkout too fast: Because of the nature of the app it does not function if you click the checkout button before the basket page has fully loaded. It needs to know what is in the cart to offer the correct upsell so it waits for the page to load. Generally the basket page loads in about 1-2 seconds so this isn't an issue, but often when testing we quickly click checkout and so we won't see the upsell offer. This will rarely ever happen with a real customer as they will look at their basket for more than 1-2 seconds to confirm that they have the right items in their cart before they hit checkout.
Q: What if my product has variants?
A: Currently with the Shopify API we are not able to call the selection tool that’s normally on your product page, for example Small, Medium or Large. So the way the app handles it is it creates multiple products, each with the different variant. So if you are making a product an upsell offer that has 3 variants it will display 3 products on the offer screen, each one with the different variant. We may be able to change this in the future, but for the time being it is the only way to handle it.
On a side note, we generally find that products without variants that don’t have different options such as size are better choices for upsell offers because they can be more of an impulse item.
Q: What happens if the customers basket triggers more than one offer?
A: Currently all of the offers will display at checkout. So if you have an offer that checks to see if the cart value is over 100$ and a second offer that checks if they bought a specific item; and the customer qualifies for both offers, we will present the collections for both offers.
We understand that this may not be suitable for all stores, so we are currently working on an enhancement that will give you the ability to decide if we should only display one of the two offers that qualify on checkout or still display them all. We will let you know when this is complete.
Q: How many products can I include in an offer?A: You can add as many as you like, there is no limit. However, we have found that 1 or 2 products per offer seem to get a much higher conversion rate then when there are more than that. One product per offer is best in our opinion. Remember, it is an upsell offer and you don't want to confuse the customer. You simply want to offer them a product that compliments their purchase.
Q: What if I only have a certain quantity of stock of the products to offer?A: That's no problem! When you create the offer select the box that says "Hide products that are out of stock" This way it will not offer the product if it is not available.
Q: Is there a limit to the number of upsell offers I can offer?
A: Absolutely not! All plans allow unlimited Upsells so set up as many as you want! We have found that stores that create a unique offer for each collection in their store see the highest rates of conversion on their offers. We have some store’s seeing over $5,000 worth of conversions on just their upsell offers!
For every product, or collection of products on your store you might sell different items that would be a great complimentary upsell for them. So when someone buys a leather jacket don't offer them the same thing as when they buy a dress shirt. For example when they buy the leather jacket offer them a leather treatment kit, and when they buy the dress shirt offer them a tie! With targeted offers like this you'll see a much higher conversion rate.
Q: What happens if a customers cart has an upsell item in their basket?A: If there is an offer that would be triggered, but the customer already has the item that is in the offer in their shopping cart it will not offer it to them again. Before the upsell is offered the app checked the cart to make sure that the item is not already in it.
Q: What happens if I don’t set any triggers?A: You would think that the offer would not be turned on. It’s actually the opposite. If you leave all the triggers blank the offer will show for every purchase on your store. This is a quick easy way to make an upsell offer trigger for any sale. If you’d like to temporarily disable an offer, without deleting it, the easiest way to do that is set a price range trigger of $0.01 to $0.02. That way essentially nothing should trigger that offer.
